We’ve been working hard at re•generation for the last few months on a campaign titled REWORK YOUR FUTURE, which aims to help young people kickstart their careers in fields that advance the just transition to a clean economy.
Our new website is full of career resources, a job board, and guides to each of the seven sectors of the clean economy. These include Clean Energy, Ecosystem Restoration, Sustainable Food, Impact Investing, Sustainable Mobility, Green Infrastructure, and Circular Economy. Check out the ‘Discover Clean Careers’ tab of our website to browse each sector, and find additional resources to get informed, get involved, and get a job! On our ‘Debunk Fossil Fuel Myths’ page, we list nine key myths which the fossil fuel industry uses to maintain its influence, and debunk them one by one.
In October 2024, we will be releasing a 45-minute documentary exploring how the fossil fuel industry has influenced Canada’s political and economic systems over the last 50 years, and captured both policymaking processes and the public imagination. Coinciding with this launch, we will launch Phase two of REWORK YOUR FUTURE by targeting the individual companies that we believe are most responsible for blocking progress. Stay tuned to find out more 👀
Our campaign makes four central demands of all employers, which are to:
RAISE support for clean energy and phase-out fossil fuels;
REDUCE emissions in line with global climate goals;
RESPECT Indigenous rights and sovereignty; and
RESTORE nature and protect biodiversity.
As part of this project, we’re producing a series of short documentaries on each of the key sectors of the clean economy to showcase organizations across the country that are moving us towards a different kind of future.
We’re so excited to share the first documentary with you this week on Sustainable Food! In it, you’ll find the stories of three changemakers from different parts of Canada who are rethinking the way we grow and eat food.
This issue is an especially important one in Canada as our agricultural system is in dire need of transformation. The total greenhouse gas emissions from Canadian agriculture are up 41 percent since 1990, while the tonnage of nitrogen fertilizer use has doubled. On-farm diesel use has doubled as well. All of this while 18 percent of Canadians reported being food insecure in 2022, a 16 percent increase the year before. And 58 percent of all food in Canada is wasted.
The tides are beginning to shift, however, as we recognize more and more the necessity of creating a sustainable food system, both to combat overall emissions and to ensure that we can produce enough food amidst a changing climate.
Enter our three case studies showing just how this is taking place. We hear from Cheyenne Sundance, founder of Sundance Harvest, a farm and nonprofit that provides tools, guidance, and access for new farmers who face barriers in entry into the agricultural sector. Then, we hear about ALUS through the lens of farmer Marc Bercier. ALUS supports farmers and ranchers in implementing practices that enhance ecosystems and biodiversity on their lands while maintaining agricultural productivity. Finally, we hear the story of Chef Yasi Zorlutuna, who runs Community FEWD, which stands for Food Equity With Dignity. Their initiative tackles food insecurity and surplus food by utilizing a mobile solution in the form of a food truck. To date, Community FEWD has helped to rescue over 12,000 kg of food and served more than 28,000 meals in the community of Guelph, regardless of their ability to pay.
We hope that you enjoy watching the documentary – we’ve worked hard to bring you these stories in an engaging and inspiring way. Stay tuned for the next releases on the other sectors of the clean economy, and check out our website for comprehensive sector guides and career resources, as well as our job board for up-to-date opportunities from sustainability-minded employers across the country. And a huge thanks to filmmakers Carter Kirilenko and Adam Combs for their amazing work on this project.
